The Air Force men's basketball team received its highest predicted finish in the Mountain West Conference so far this season by CBS SportsLine, which picked the Falcons to finish fifth in the MWC for the 2002-03 campaign.
Wyoming was chosen to repeat as league champion by the website, followed by UNLV, Utah, BYU, Air Force, San Diego State, Colorado State and New Mexico.
Here is what CBS SportsLine's Dan Wetzel had to say about this year's team:
Pluses: It takes time to get make the Princeton system work, but you could see the signs that the Falcons were breaking through last year. Forget the 9-19 record -- the Falcons scared the heck out of just about everyone. Now in Year 3 of Joe Scott's tenure, with four starters and a bunch of reserves back, Air Force is ready to make a break to the middle of the pack.
Minuses: Confidence and a killer instinct are in short supply. It is not a stretch to say Air Force could have won nine or 10 games in the league last year. It wound up with three for a reason. Some of those close calls have to be turned into victories.
Parting shot: When the Falcons are playing their game, they are straight fun to watch. Watching a military academy absolutely out-execute and humble a more-talented opponent makes you feel a little better about paying your taxes.
