John Frye Named MWC Player of the Week

Air Force Academy junior John Frye was named the Mountain West Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week Monday, marking his first career award.

A 6-10 center from Fredericksburg, Va., Frye guided the Falcons to a 2-0 mark last week with wins over Georgia Tech, 54-46, and IPFW, 77-42. In the win over the Yellowjackets, Frye connected on all three of his three-point shots and 7-of-8 free throws for a game-high 18 points, including 16 in the second half. His first trifecta at 16:27 of the second stanza snapped a streak of 14 straight missed field goals for Air Force and trimmed the Yellowjackets' lead to one (25-24). He was 4-of-4 from the free throw line with under three minutes remaining in the game. After stealing a Georgia Tech entry pass on the defensive end, Frye stepped to the line and hit his final two free throws with 1:15 left to give the Falcons a seven-point cushion. Overall, Frye was 4-of-5 from the field vs. Georgia Tech, while the rest of the Falcons were 9-of-39.

In a victory over IPFW, Frye hit his only three-point attempt and was 3-of-5 from the field with seven points and two rebounds. For the week, he was 7-of-10 from the field, 4-of-4 from beyond the arc and 7-of-8 from the free throw line (87.5 percent). He averaged 12.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks.

The Falcons, 12-1, host BYU in the Mountain West opener on Thursday, Jan. 5 at Clune Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 9 p.m.
