Despite career highs of 23 points and nine rebounds from junior Marek Olesinski, the Air Force men's basketball team suffered its first loss in the three-year history of the All-Military Classic, falling 73-61 to Virginia Military Institute Saturday in the championship game in Lexington, Va.
The Falcons (1-1) won the title the first two years of the tournament and opened the 2013-14 season with a victory Friday over Army. Air Force jumped out to an early 11-4 lead Saturday, but gave up a 20-4 run as VMI took a 24-15 lead with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half.
The Keydets (2-0) extended the lead to 39-25 on the strength of a four-point play at the end of the first half by tournament MVP QJ Peterson and increased the advantage to as large as 21 with nine minutes remaining in the game. The Falcons fought back, however, as Olesinski scored seven points and junior Max Yon had six during a 13-1 run that closed the gap to 62-53 with 5:40 left, but they could not get closer until sophomore Tre' Coggins hit a jumper in the final seconds.
Coggins was the lone Falcon named to the all-tournament team after scoring 32 points in two games - including 14) on Saturday. Yon equaled his career-highs (set on Friday against Army) with 12 points and five rebounds, while senior Chase Kammerer pulled down a career-best seven rebounds.
The Falcons will play their home opener on Thursday, Nov. 14 against Jackson State at Clune Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
