USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force baseball Blue-White series concluded Sunday with the Blue Team winning game three, 2-1, to take the best of three series at Falcon Field. Junior catcher/outfielder Garrett Custons was named series MVP.
The Blue team scored all the runs it would need on Custon's two-run home run in the first inning. Junior right-hander Todd Del Toro pitched five scoreless innings to pick up the win. Alex Baker pitched the final four innings, allowing one run while picking up the save.
Junior left-hander Ben Bertelson pitched five innings in the start for the White team. After the first inning, Bertelson settled down and threw four scoreless innings. Mike Kazakoff, Matt Zettler and Ben Yokley combined to hold the Blue team scoreless in relief.
"Overall the weekend went very well," head coach Mike Kazlausky said. "The guys competed in all three games. It was a good series and it has set a good foundation in our preparation for the 2012 season. Next week we will get back to work and continue to develop our players to compete at the highest level. I want to thank everyone who was involved to make this weekend a success."
"I thought this weekend went well," pitching coach Tim Dixon said. "With the exception of the White team on Friday we pitched very well in all three games. Some guys really stepped it up and I enjoyed watching them compete. I am excited to get back to work with these guys next week and really focus on fine tuning their mechanics and the beginning of our weighted ball and velocity program. Great weekend for Falcon baseball!"
The series concludes the fall team practices. The players will have this week off and will resume with individual workouts next week.
