USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force baseball senior left-hander Michael Ceci pitched six scoreless innings to lead the Blue team to a 10-0 win over the White team in the series-opener of the 2011 Blue-White series Friday afternoon at Falcon Field. In front of a crowd of over 500 fans, Ceci scattered three hits and was helped by his teams' six-run second inning.
The large Falcon baseball crowd was entertained by an offensive onslaught by coach Toby Bicknell's Blue team in the seven inning game. The Blue scored a run in the first inning as Seth Kline delivered a two-out double that scored Garrett Custons who had singled earlier in the inning.
The Blue team then erupted for six runs in the second inning. Matthew Roberts led-off the inning with a single but was put out at second on a fielder's choice by Jake Sortor. Andrew Chaves then executed a hit-and-run base hit to advance Sortor to third. With one out, Casey Gibson laid down a safety squeeze that was misplayed by the White team.
Patrick Lobo followed with a base hit to right field to lead the bases. Custons then rocketed a a double off the wall in right center to clear the bases. He later scored on a passed ball.
The Blue team added three more runs in the fifth to jump ahead 9-0. After two quick outs in the bottom of the fifth, Brian Sicher walked and Roberts singled for the third time in the game to advance Sicher to second. Sortor then took an outer half fastball and drove a double to right center to score Sicher. Chaves then singled to left to score Roberts and Sortor to put three on the board to take a 9-0 lead.
The Blue team tacked on its final run in the sixth. Custons led off the inning with a single to left for his third hit of the game. He then stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a ground out by Ryan Kramer.
The Blue Team was led by Custons who had three hits including a double, three rbi's, and three runs scored. Roberts also collected three hits for the Blue Team. The Blue Team pounded out 13 hits in the game, as seven of the starting nine had hits and scored a run.
Coach Bicknelll stated, "Michael Ceci gave us a great outing today. We played solid defense, and executed on offense with timely hitting. I am really proud of the way our guys played today. We played with a lot of energy and passion".
Coach of the White Team Mark Crocco had this to say after the defeat, " I know that these group of guys will respond with passion and enthusiasm and will grind tomorrow. I drafted this group for this reason and I like our chances in a must-win situation. You have to tip your hat to Michael Ceci and the Blue team. They played Falcon Baseball and it showed today. I expect a great baseball game on both sides tomorrow".
Game two will begin at 12 p.m. tomorrow at Falcon Field.
