Northwest Missouri State To Honor Air Force Athletic Trainer

MARYVILLE, Mo. -Air Force athletic trainer David "DC" Colt will be honored today at Northwest Missouri State as the NW Missouri State training room will be renamed the David "DC" Colt Athletic Training Room. An inductee of four separate hall of fames, Colt currently works with the Falcon baseball, swimming and diving programs. Colt was a faculty member in Northwest's Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and was the University's head athletic trainer for 27 years. In 2008, he became an athletic trainer at the Air Force Academy. In addition to naming the training room in Colt's honor, a fundraising initiative aims to garner $100,000 for the Colt Fund, which has been established through the Northwest Foundation. The purpose of the Colt Fund is to raise money and house gifts that are designated to support the University's sports medicine program. The funds will be used at the discretion of the athletic training staff for equipment or immediate or long-term improvements to the athletic training room. "From injury analysis, treatment or rehabilitation or in providing mental or moral support to student athletes, Dave Colt was considered the best," said Dr. Bob Boerigter, Northwest's director of athletics. "A gift to the Colt Fund honors DC's name and legacy and will assist the University in maintaining the high standards of expectations for the area that he established during his tenure at Northwest." A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Colt graduated from West Virginia University in 1977, received his master's from Northwest in 1978 and his doctorate in education from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2006. Colt has been a certified athletic trainer since 1977 and has received many accolades throughout his career, including four Hall of Fame inductions. Most recently, Colt was named to the National Athletic Trainers' Association Hall of Fame in 2008. He also was inducted into the Missouri Athletic Trainers' Association Sports Medicine Hall of Fame, the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame and the Mid-America Athletic Trainers' Association Hall of Fame.
Furthermore, Colt was named the Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer by the NATA in 2004 and the NATA Division II Athletic Trainer of the Year in 2006. He was honored as the MoATA Athletic Trainer of the Year in 1995 and 1999 and earned the Dan Libera Service Award from the NATA Board of Certification in 2004.
