Air Force Academy

Metro State, 18-20-1 overall, took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Jerod Stultz led off the game with a single to left field. He advanced to second on a Falcon error and then scored an unearned run on Donald Gwinner's ground out.

In the bottom of the first, Air Force's first four batters got on base. Bowie Frost's two-run single gave the Falcons a 3-1 lead. Three batters later, Dan Petro's two-run single gave Air Force a 6-1 lead. Mike Thiessen delivered the biggest blow of the inning in his second at-bat. Thiessen hit a grand slam to left field for a 10-1 Air Force lead. The Falcons sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning.

Metro State chipped away at the Falcon lead with two runs on four singles in the top of the fifth to make the score 12-4. AFA broke the game open with six in the bottom of the fifth of the seven-inning game. Thiessen drove in two runs with a double to left-center field and Brad Bashore hit a three-run home run.

Every Air Force player that started got a hit. Gerremy Goldsberry led the Falcons with three hits. Thiessen was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and six RBI. Tony Shockley, Frost and Petro each had two hits. Stultz led the Roadrunners with three hits and two runs scored.

Air Force starter David Diehl earned the win as he went five innings and gave up four runs, three earned on seven hits with three strikeouts. Metro starter Robbie Carson took the loss. He went three innings and gave up 12 runs, seven earned, on 10 hits.

Air Force, 21-22 overall, returns to action April 20-22 with a three-game Mountain West Conference series against UNLV. The Falcons and Rebels play Friday at 2 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at noon.
