Pingel Named MWC Pitcher Of The Week
March 3, 2008
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Air Force freshman left-hander Brad Pingel and UNLV junior Xavier Scruggs have been named Mountain West Conference Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively. This is the first career weekly honor for both recipients.
In three relief appearances on the week, Pingel went 1-0 and led the Air Force pitching staff with a 1.59 ERA in 5.2 innings pitched. In a 5-3, 10 inning win over Northern Colorado, the St. Louis, Mo., native, came on in the seventh inning striking out back-to-back batters with the bases loaded and getting out of the inning unscathed as the Falcons rallied for their first win of the season. In the first game of a two-game series vs. Mississippi State, Pingel hurled 1.0 innings, giving up one hit and no runs in a 3-1 loss. In game two, Pingel picked up the win, marking the first time ever Air Force defeated a Southeastern Conference opponent. In 3.2 innings of relief work, he gave up two runs (one earned run) on four hits, while striking out four.
Scruggs, a San Diego, Calif., native, hit .667 (14-for-21) with three home runs, two doubles, one triple, 10 RBI and nine runs scored in five games played, leading the Rebels to a 3-2 record over that span.
Air Force returns to action Thursday, March 6, taking on Maine at the Papa John's Palm Beach Challenge in Palm Beach, Fla.
