Koegel Named MWC Baseball Pitcher of the Week


    U.S.A.F Academy, Colo. - Air Force sophomore right-hander Johnny Koegel was named the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week after leading the Falcons to a 3-1 victory over Memphis in the title game of the 2001 Service Academies Classic on Feb. 25.

    Koegel, from West Hills, Calif., threw the first complete game of his collegiate career against the 33rd-ranked Tigers, handing them their first loss of the season. He faced 28 batters over seven innings, scattering four hits and allowing one unearned run. His career-high 10 strikeouts earned him a spot on the Service Academies Classic all-tournament team.

    The Falcons are 11-5 heading into this weekend's home stand against Nebraska-Omaha and Northern Iowa. The Falcons host Nebraska-Omaha in a single game on Thursday, Mar. 1 at 1 p.m., then Northern Iowa for a three-game series beginning Friday, Mar. 2 at 1 p.m.
