Falcon Nine Fall to Memphis but Make Service Academies Title Game
The Falcons ended round robin play with Army, Navy and Memphis with a 2-1 record, while the Tigers were a perfect 3-0. Navy was 1-2 and Army 0-3. Army and Navy will play in the consolation game.
Clinton stroked a solo home run in the third inning off Falcons starter Matt Kaercher to open the scoring, then hit a three-run triple in the fourth off Brad Bashore, who had just entered the game. The Tigers added two more runs in the fourth to claim a 6-0 lead.
Down 7-0 in the seventh, the Falcons struck for two runs. Josh Phifer hit a one-out single and advanced to second when Derck Kasel reached on a Tiger error. Daniel Petro followed with a double to right field that scored Phifer, while Kasel scored on Nelson Prouty's ground out.
Memphis, 6-0, added run in each of the eighth and ninth innings, and the Falcons closed out the scoring in the ninth when pinch hitter Rob Arnett singled and scored on a pinch hit double by David Diehl.
The Falcons, 10-5, mustered only six hits off Tiger starter Jarod Wilson and reliever Nick Rogers. Price Paramore was the only Air Force player to register more than one hit, going 2-for-3.
