USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - In preparation for the 2008 season, the Air Force baseball begins official team practices today. The Falcons open their season Feb. 22 against Navy at the Service Academy Spring Classic in Millington, Tenn.

Entering his fifth year at the helm, head coach Mike Hutcheon looks to lead a young Air Force team to its best season yet. The Falcons return 17 letterwinners, including seven starters off the 2007 squad. Eighteen newcomers, 16 of them freshmen, join the squad. Air Force features just four seniors and four juniors. With 11 sophomores, 77 percent of the team is comprised of underclassmen.

Senior Chay Derbigy and junior Jake Petro have been selected at team captains for the 2008 season. Derbigny is Air Force's top returning hitter, batting .301 with 16 stolen bases last year. Petro led the Falcons with a 3-9 record to go with a 6.28 earned run average in 77.1 innings pitched in 2007.
