The Air Force Academy swept the season's first Mountain West Conference weekly baseball honors as junior outfielder Josh Phifer earned Player of the Week honors and senior right-hander Matt Werner earned Pitcher of the Week accolades.

A native of Torrington, Wyo. (Torrington HS), Phifer helped lead Air Force to a pair of road victories at New Mexico State last weekend. Phifer tied a career-best with four RBI in game two vs. the Aggies, belting two doubles in four at-bats. In game three, Phifer cranked a double and a home run, while going 5-for-6 from the plate with three RBI. For the week, Phifer hit .583 (7-for-12) with seven RBI and six runs scored, and totaled seven putouts. He drove in the game-winning run in game two and scored the game-winning run in game three.

Werner, of Norfolk, Conn. (NW Regional No. 7 HS), earned his first career save by shutting down New Mexico State in the final two innings of Air Force's 22-19 victory in game three of the series. Werner faced 12 batters, allowing two hits and no runs, while striking out three. He also closed out the Falcons' 12-7 win by facing three batters in the last 2/3 inning of game two, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Air Force, 2-1 this season, opens the home schedule this weekend with a three-game series against Hastings College at Falcon Field. The team play a doubleheader Saturday at 10 a.m. and a single game at noon Sunday.
