Falcons Eliminated From MWC Baseball Championships With 23-2 Loss To New Mexico
May 27, 2004 LAS VEGAS, Nevada - An eight-run first inning was more than enough for New Mexico, as the second-seeded Lobos downed sixth-seeded Air Force 23-2 to eliminate the Falcons from the 2004 Mountain West Conference Baseball Championships Thursday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. With the loss, AFA concludes its season with a 6-49 record. Over 10 Mountain West Conference Tournament records were set or tied in a game that showcased an eight-run first inning and 10-run fourth by UNM. New Mexico wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as they scored eight runs on six hits in the first inning. The Lobos sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning, highlighted by Josh Mader's three-run homer. It was the second time in the tourney Air Force had given up eight runs in the first inning, as they surrendered an eight-spot to UNLV in its first game yesterday. UNM starter Danny Ray Herrera (4-7) earned the win, allowing one unearned run on three hits while fanning three in five innings pitched. AFA starter William Goss (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs in two-thirds of an inning. Daniel Stovall homered to left field in the second inning to make it a 9-0 game. The Falcons got on the scoreboard in the third, as Matt Musser knocked in Geno Salazar from third with a ground out to first base to make it a 9-1 game. UNM scored a run in the third and then tied a MWC Tournament record with 10 runs in the fourth to make it a 20-1 game. New Mexico sent 15 batters to the plate in the fourth and set a another MWC Tourney record with nine hits in the inning. Jay Russel's two-run homer in the sixth made it a 22-1 game, and then UNM added one more run in the seventh to make it 23-1.
Karl Bolt doubled off the top of the fence in center field in the ninth, then came around to score on Nathan DeRohan's single through the right side.
New Mexico had 25 hits in the game, also a new MWC Tourney record. AFA had six hits in the game, with Karl Bolt leading the way, going 2-for-4 with a double. DeRohan also had two hits for the Falcons. Game Notes: Goss made his second start of the season... Josh Wolfram stole his team-leading 17th base of the season and 3rd of the tournament... Bolt recorded his team-leading 59th and 60th hits of the season... DeRohan recorded his team-leading 34th RBI of the season. --30-- |
