ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Air Force baseball dropped a 22-4 ballgame at New Mexico Thursday at Isotopes Park. The loss dropped the Falcons to 14-37, 5-17 and improved the Lobos to 31-22, 16-6.
The Lobo bats were too much for the Falcons, posting a pair of big-run innings. New Mexico erupted for eight runs in the fifth and 10 in the seventh. UNM had 22 hits on the day. Mitchell Garver had five hits and four runs for UNM and Ryan Padilla added a homer and five RBIs.
Air Force starting pitcher Cameron White faced just one batter in the game after getting struck by a line drive to his throwing hand. Ben Bertelson (1-9) relieved White and pitched four innings in the loss. Matt Zettler, Jack Hourin, Alex Baker, Mike Kazakoff and Todd Del Toro also pitched in relief.
The Falcons had seven hits on the day. Freshman catcher Brian Sicher led the Falcons at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a triple and a walk. Outfielder Jake Schomaker also had two hits. Freshman Andrew Chaves also got his first-career hit for the Falcons.
Lobo starting pitcher Austin House (6-5) picked up the win, striking out five in six innings pitched.
The Falcons scored two runs in the fifth and ninth innings.
Game two of the three-game set is tomorrow at noon.
