May 15, 2014
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Playing its third extra inning game in its last four, Air Force baseball dropped a heart breaking 2-1 ballgame in 10 innings at New Mexico Thursday night at Lobo Field. The loss dropped the Falcons to 19-32, 9-19 and improved the Lobos to 36-17-1, 19-9.
Air Force held the lead for eight innings but could not put the game away. New Mexico tied the game up with a run in the bottom of the ninth, when the Falcons failed to complete the tail end of a double play to end the game.
With one out and runners on first and second, Falcon reliever Ben Yokley got the Lobos' top hitter, Alex Real, to hit a soft grounder right back to him. The Falcons were unable to complete the double play however and Chase Harris was able to come around to score from second to send the game into extra innings.
The Lobos pushed across the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th to pull out the win. Aaron Siple hit a bases loaded single to score Andre Vigil for the game-winning run.
Yokley (2-4) took the hard-luck loss, pitching 1.1 innings. Falcon starting pitcher Cameron White pitched six scoreless innings in the non-decision. The senior struck out six on the night. Bo Wilson pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth innings in relief. Trent Monaghan gave up the game-ending hit in the 10th.
Air Force had nine hits on the night. Spencer Draws, Tyler Jones and Jake Schomaker had two hits each for the Falcons. Seth Kline scored Air Force's run with a leadoff double to start the fourth. Kline came around to score on Travis Neubeck's sacrifice fly.
New Mexico had 13 hits on the night. Harris led the way, going 4-for-4 with the game winning run. Lobo reliever Jake Cole (3-1) picked up the win. Starting pitcher Josh Walker pitched 7.1 innings, striking out four.
Game two of the three-game series is tomorrow. First pitch is 7 p.m.
