SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Air Force baseball team dropped a 21-6 Mountain West Conference ballgame at San Diego State Saturday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The loss dropped the Falcons to 11-36, 1-14 while the Aztecs improved to 24-23, 9-8.
San Diego State scored multiple runs five times, including five runs in the second and seven in the sixth. The three-four duo of Brandon Meredith and Cory Vaughn did a lot of the damage for the Aztecs. Meredith went 3-for-3 with four runs and four RBIs. Vaughn, the son of former major leaguer Greg Vaughn, went 4-for-6 with two homers and seven RBIs. San Diego State had 18 hits on the day.
Air Force had 10 hits on the day. Senior third baseman K.J. Randhawa led the way, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Matt Alexander added two hits, Nathan Carter scored two runs and Alex Bast drove in two runs as well.
Reliever Robert Alcala (1-3) picked up the win in relief. Starter Bryan Crabb lasted just 3.1 innings, allowing six runs.
After Air Force scored a run in the top of the first, San Diego scored three in the bottom of the inning. The Falcons responded with a run in the second, but the Aztecs put up their five runs to lead 8-2.
Air Force made things interesting, scoring four in the fourth to pull to within two runs at 8-6. That was as close as AFA would get, as SDSU put up four in the fifth and seven in the sixth to go up 19-6. The Aztecs added two more runs in the eighth.
Air Force and San Diego State wrap up the three-game series tomorrow, May 9. First pitch is 1 p.m. PST.
