Air Force baseball (15-20, 7-8 MW) defeated UNLV (25-12, 8-6 MW), 5-1, in a Mountain West road game Saturday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev. Junior Matt Hargreaves (2-4) held the Rebels to just one run over six innings pitched for the win.
The Falcons broke up a 1-1 tie with an RBI single by senior Ryan Robb in the seventh inning. The Falcons tacked on three runs in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run triple by sophomore Ashton Easley.
Hargreaves turned in his best outing of the season, scattering seven hits, while striking out four. The junior did not allow a run until the sixth inning. The Falcon bullpen combined for three shutout innings to close out the game. Josh Leaser, Shawn Kelley and Ethan Nichols pitched in relief. Nichols got the last five outs to finish off the game.
Air Force had 12 hits in the game. Robb led the way, going 4 for 5 with an RBI. Nic Ready added a home run to go with two runs and two hits. Drew Wiss and Tyler Zabojnik also had two hits each.
UNLV had nine hits. Nick Rodriguez had two hits, including a home run. Chase Maddux (3-4) took the loss, allowing two runs in six innings pitched.
Hargreaves and Maddux dueled through five scoreless innings to start the game. Ready homered in the sixth for the first run of the game. Rodriguez homered in the bottom of the inning to tie the game up.
The Falcons went ahead in the seventh on Robb’s RBI, that scored Daniel Jones. The Falcons broke the game open with the three-run eighth.
Game three of the series is tomorrow at 1 pm PT.
