Air Force Falls To New Mexico Saturday, 26-9

FARMINGTON, N.M. - New Mexico hit eight home runs, four by Brian Cavazos-Galvez alone, defeating Air Force, 26-9, in Mountain West Conference baseball action Saturday night at Ricketts Field. The Falcons drop to 11-21, 0-10 while the Lobos improved to 23-12, 7-4.
Cavazos-Galvez, a junior outfielder, went 6-for-7 on the day with six runs and 10 RBIs. His four home runs and 19 total bases are Mountain West Conference records. With 28 hits on the day, 15 for extra bases, New Mexico also set a conference record with 61 total bases.
The Lobos scored in every inning but the fourth, racking up multiple runs in six different inning. New Mexico scored four runs in the first and second innings and five in the third to go ahead 13-0. Kevin Atkinson and Ian Hollick also had four hits on the day with Atkinson hitting two homers and Hollick one. Bret Fanning also homered for UNM.
Air Force, which had 11 hits on the day, scored five runs in the fifth, one in the seventh and three in the eighth. Chay Derbigny went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Nathan Carter was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Daniel Walker also hit his fourth triple of the year (in 43 at bats so far in 2008).
The Falcons used five pitchers on the day, four of wich were freshmen. Starter Brad Pingel (2-2) was knocked out the game in the first inning. Matt Barattino, Gregg Laswell, Jeff Abt and junior Adam Teach followed up in relief duties.
Lobo starter Jacob Norton (4-2) picked up the win with seven innings pitched. Norton allowed six runs off seven hits and struck out four. Drew Kendrick and Ryan Escarcega closed out the game for UNM.
The series wraps up tomorrow, Sunday, April 13, back at Ricketts Park.
