USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force racked up a season-high 20 hits in a 16-5 win over in-state rival Northern Colorado Tuesday afternoon at Falcon Field. The win improved the Falcons to 8-22 and dropped the Bears to 10-17.
The Falcons also had a season-high for runs. Leading 7-2, AFA put the game away with a seven-run sixth inning.
Seven players had multiple hits for Air Force. The team also had eight extra base hits. Junior Garrett Custons and freshman Noah Pierce homered for the Falcons. Custons went 3-for-5 at the plate, adding a double, three runs and three RBIs. Pierce hit his first-career homer, a grand slam in the sixth.
Blair Roberts had two hits and two runs, Alex Bast went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, David Thomas doubled and tripled and added two RBIs. Matt Thorne had two hits and three runs, Brian Sicher and Jake Schomaker also had two hits.
Falcon reliever Matt Zettler (1-0) picked up the win with 2.2 scoreless innings pitched. Falcon starting pitcher Michael Ceci went 4.1 innings, allowing three runs while striking out two. Ben Yokley, Mike Kazakoff and Alex Baker also pitched in relief.
Northern Colorado had 10 hits. Ryan Yamane, Taylor Anderson and Adam Hilker had two hits each for UNC. Bear starting pitcher Casey Coy (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs in three innings pitched.
After the Bears and Falcons traded runs in the first, the Falcons took control of the game with three runs in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth. Northern Colorado scored two runs in both the fifth and eighth innings. The Falcons added two runs in the eighth.
Senior Victor Iacobbo appeared in his first game of the season for the Falcons, subbing in at second and third. Sophomore Seth Kline also had a pinch-hit single in his return from an injury suffered at San Diego State a week-and-a-half ago.
Air Force returns to action Friday, April 13, at TCU.
