USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force baseball dropped a 17-2 game to New Mexico Friday afternoon at Falcon Field. The loss drops the Falcons to 6-22, 2-6 and improves the Lobos to 14-15, 7-1.
New Mexico racked up 21 hits in the game and blew the game open with a seven-run second inning. Lobo starting pitcher Josh Walker (3-2) picked up the win with 10 strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
Center fielder Josh Melendez and left fielder John Pustay led UNM, combining for six hits and six RBIs. Melendez went 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Pustay, a Colorado Springs native, went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs.
Air Force had 10 hits in the game. Junior designated hitter Matt Thorne and freshman first baseman Tyler Saleck had two hits each to lead the Falcons. Freshman left fielder David Thomas also added a solo home run.
After scoring a run in the first, New Mexico put up seven in the third and four more in the fifth. The Lobos tacked on another run in the sixth, three in the seventh and one more in the eighth.
Air Force got on the scoreboard in the fourth on Thomas' second homer of the season. Noah Pierce then doubled and came around to score on a single by Saleck.
Game three of the series is tomorrow at noon.
