USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force baseball dropped a 11-5 ballgame to New Mexico Friday afternoon at Falcon Field. The loss dropped the Falcons to 8-20, 2-6 and improved the Lobos to 15-14, 7-3.
A six-run second inning was where New Mexico did most of its damage. With the winds blowing out hard to right, the two teams combined to hit four home runs and 14 extra base hits.
Air Force had 13 hits in the game. Senior catcher Garrett Custons, junior first baseman Seth Kline, freshman Mariano Long and senior second baseman Matthew Roberts had two hits each for the Falcons. Freshman Coleman Poje also hit his second home run of the season. Long also added a triple.
Starting pitcher Cameron White (2-6) took the loss in six inning pitched for the Falcons. The junior walked two batters on the day. His first walk snapped a 38-inning streak without allowing a walk. Freshman Brady Weaver and senior Todd Del Toro pitched in relief.
New Mexico had 13 hits. Designated hitter D.J. Peterson went 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs. First baseman Alex Real and leftfielder Ryan Padilla also homered for the Lobos.
Hobie McLain (1-0) picked up the win in relief for UNM. Starting pitcher Kevin Baumgartner pitched 1.1 innings, allowing three runs. Josh Walker picked up the save with three innings in relief.
New Mexico jumped ahead 7-0 early, with a run in the first and the six run second. The Falcons battled back with three runs in the second, highlighted by Poje's two-run shot to left.
The Lobos scored a run in the third and the Falcons got one in the fourth. New Mexico added two more runs in the sixth and both teams traded runs in the eighth.
Game two of the three-game series is tomorrow at 1 p.m. back at Falcon Field.
