Air Force Drops Both Games Of Friday Doubleheader at Utah Valley

OREM, Utah. - The Air Force baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Utah Valley Friday at Brent Brown Ballpark. The Falcons dropped game one, 13-7, and game two, 12-10. The losses dropped the Falcons to 8-19 while the Wolverines improved to 9-19. In the seven inning game one, four run second, fourth and sixth innings lifted Utah Valley to the 13-7 win. The Wolverines had 15 hits in the game, with all nine starters with a hit. Ryan Jones led the way with three hits. Billy Burgess hit a grand slam and Kevin Arendse also homered and drove in three. Utah Valley starter Justin Smith (3-3) pitched a complete game, striking out six, to pick up the win. Air Force had 13 hits in the game. Shortstop K.J. Randhawa, returning from 10 games missed due to injury, led the way by going 3-for-3 with with a run scored. Jon McMahon drove in three runs and Nathan Carter tripled. Ben Ausbun also hit his first-career home run for the Falcons, with a solo shot in the sixth inning. Falcon starter Jake Petro (1-4) took the loss, allowing eight runs, just three earned, in four innings pitched. Jason Griggs and Michael Ruvolo also pitched in relief. In game two, UVU racked up 20 hits and used some big innings to hold off a ninth inning rally by Air Force in the 12-10 game. After a scoreless three innings to the start of the game, both teams got onto the scoreboard in the fourth.
The Falcons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Utah Valley came right back with five runs however to take the lead after four. Matt Alexander hit a two-run homer in the fifth to tie up the game, but the Wolverines put up three runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 8-5 after five. After the two teams traded runs in the seventh, UVU scored three runs in the eighth to seemingly pull away, leading 12-6. Air Force put up four runs in the ninth to make it interesting. Alexander hit a two-run triple and later scored on a balk, to make it a 12-9 game. Blair Kessler then hit a pinch-hit homer to make it 12-10. The Falcons rally fell short in the end, as UVU was able to close the game out with a double play. Utah Valley was led by, Kirk Doxey, its ninth hitter in the lineup. Doxey went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs. Three other Wolverines notched three hits each. UVU starter Kole Mikolio (1-2) got the win, allowing six runs in 6.1 innings pitched. Brock Sargent closed out the game for the Wolverines in relief. Air Force had 14 hits in the game. Alexander led the way, going 2-for-3 with two runs and five RBIs. McMahon had three hits and Randhwa and Addison Gentry added two hits each. Falcon starter Matt Barattino, allowed five runs in 3.1 innings pitched. Evan Abrecht (0-3) pitched 3.2 innings in relief and took the loss. Ruvolo also pitched an inning in the second game. Air Force and Utah Valley wrap up the series with another doubleheader tomorrow, beginning at noon. |
