GREELEY, Colo. - Air Force baseball dropped a 12-4 ballgame at Northern Colorado Wednesday afternoon at Jackson Field. The loss dropped the Falcons to 8-19 and improved the Bears to 9-13.
Air Force led 4-0 early on before Northern Colorado scored 12 unanswered runs for the win.
The Falcons scored a run in the first and three in the second to jump ahead early. The Bears scored three in the second and two in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. Northern Colorado put up three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. The Bears added a final run in the seventh inning.
Air Force eight hits in the game. Senior rightfielder Garrett Custons led the way, going 3-for-5 with a double, triple and two runs scored. Sophomore shortstop Tyler Saleck and junior centerfielder David Baska added two hits each. Freshman designated hitter Peter Johnson added two RBIs.
Alex Baker (2-3) took the loss in the start for the Falcons, pitching 2.1 innings. The Falcons used five relievers on the day. Jack Hourin, Todd Del Toro, Trent Monaghan, Bo Wilson and Ben Yokley pitched in relief for AFA.
Northern Colorado had 12 hits on the day. Leftfielder Jensen Park led the Bears with two hits, two runs and two RBIs. Rightfielder Nick Miller scored three runs and drove in two.
Chris Hammer (1-2) picked up the win in relief for UNC. Robert Hawkins pitched two ininngs in the start for Northern Colorado, allowing four runs.
Two Falcon freshmen played their first collegiate games. Kenny Katzman and Jonny Graham got their first-career at bats as Falcons. Sophomore Andrew Chaves also saw his first action of the season as well.
Air Force returns to action this weekend, hosting New Mexico in a three-game Mountain West series. Game one is Friday, April 5 at 3 p.m. at Falcon Field.
