USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force baseball erupted for a season-high 18 hits in a 14-7 win over Fresno State in Mountain West action Friday afternoon at Falcon Field. The win improved the Falcons to 8-13, 2-2 and dropped the Bulldogs to 4-16, 1-3.
Air Force had seven players with multiple hits, including home runs by senior Alex Bast and freshman Coleman Poje. Junior Seth Kline went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Poje, who entered the game hitless in five at bats all season, went 3-for-5 with three runs scored.
Sophomore Tyler Saleck added two hits and three RBIs. Bast had two runs, two hits and two RBIs. Senior Garrett Custons had two hits and two RBIs and senior Matthew Roberts had two hits and two runs scored. Freshman Peter Johnson had three hits and junior David Baska scored two runs.
Junior Cameron White (2-4) pitched eight innings and struck out seven in the win. White has pitched into the eighth inning in his last five starts. Freshman Bo Wilson pitched the ninth inning to close out the game.
The Falcons took and early 1-0 lead with a run in the second. After Fresno State responded with two runs in the top of the third, Air Force responded with two runs of its own to go back up 3-2.
The Falcons then broke the game wide open with a six-run fourth inning to go up 9-2. After two runs by the Bulldogs in the fifth, AFA responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. The Falcons also scored runs in the sixth and eighth innings. Fresno State added runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth.
Fresno State had 13 hits on the day. First baseman Jordan Brink and centerfielder Aaron Judge homered and had two hits each for the Bulldogs. Starting pitcher Tyler Linehan (2-3) allowed 12 runs in 4.1 innings pitched for the loss.
Games two and three in the series is now slated for a Sunday doubleheader starting at noon. Saturday's game has already been postponed due to snow forecast tonight and into Saturday. Updates will be posted at goAirForceFalcons.com and via twitter at http://twitter.com/AF_Falcons
