SAUGET, Ill. - Air Force baseball defeated Western Illinois, 7-3, Sunday at GCS Stadium. The Falcons snapped a nine-game skid, improving to 4-12, while the Leathernecks fell to 5-10.
Senior right-hander Evan Abrecht (1-0) held Western Illinois to three runs over seven innings, while striking out five to pick up the win. Relievers Mike Kazakoff and Alex Baker closed out the game with scoreless eighth and ninth innings in relief.
With the game tied 3-3, Air Force erupted for four runs in the seventh inning to pull ahead for good. A two-run double from leftfielder David Thomas broke up the tie game.
Western Illinois reliever Nick Smith (2-1) took the loss. Leatherneck starting pitcher Dustin Hunter pitched five innings, allowing three runs. Western Illiois had seven hits in the game. Dan Dispensa led the way with two hits.
The Leathernecks struck first with two runs in the first inning. Air Force battled back with runs in the second and third to tie the game up. The Falcons took a 3-2 lead with a run in the fifth before WIU tied it up with a run in the sixth.
The Falcons got things going in the eighth with back-to-back singles by Garrett Custons and Kline. Two batters later, Thomas connected with a double to score both runners. After catcher Brian Sicher and third baseman Noah Pierce drew back-to-back walks to load the bases, shortstop Casey Gibson was hit by a pitch to score Thomas. Sicher then scored on a ground-out by Jake Schomaker.
Air Force returns to action Tuesday at #22 Oklahoma.
