BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Air Force baseball fell to Gardner-Webb 4-3 Sunday afternoon at John Henry Moss Stadium. The Falcons dropped to 5-10 on the season, while the Runnin' Bulldogs improved to 11-3-1.
All the scoring in the game took place in the fifth inning, as AFA suffered its fifth-straight loss by one run.
The Falcons scored three runs in the top-half of the inning to take an early lead. Gardner-Webb rallied with the four runs in the bottom-half of the inning.
Air Force had nine hits in the game. Senior leftfielder Garrett Custons went 2-for-3 with two walks, a triple and two RBIs. Junior firstbaseman Seth Kline added two hits and sophomore catcher Brian Sicher had two hits, which included a triple and RBI.
Gardner-Webb had just five hits on the day, the third-consecutive game where the Falcons out-hit the Bulldogs. Starting pitcher Erik Heilgenstad (2-0) picked up the win, allowing three unearned runs in five innings. Closer Jeff Howell picked up his second save in the series .
Air Force returns to action next weekend, opening Mountain West play at Nevada on Friday, March 15.
