Air Force Drops A Pair Sunday To #24 Fresno State

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force baseball dropped a pair of games Sunday to #24 Fresno State at Falcon Field. The Falcons (4-9, 1-5) lost 7-5 and 10-8 to the Bulldogs (11-4, 5-1).
In game one Fresno State hung on to a 7-5 win. The game was a continuation of the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, which was halted after six innings of play due to darkness.
With the score 6-5 in Fresno State's favor to start Sunday's action, Bulldog reliever Derick Velazquez tossed three shutout innings to close the the game and pick up the save. Fresno State starting pitcher Jimmy Lambert (1-1) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing five runs for the win.
Air Force starting pitcher Steven Trojan (1-3) took the loss, allowing five runs in five innings, while tying a career high with seven strikeouts. Ben Yokley pitched the sixth and Bo Wilson allowed one unearned run in 2.1 innings worked. Nathan Stanford got the last two outs in relief for the Falcons.
Air Force had 11 hits in the game. Leftfielder Tyler Jones led the Falcons at the plate, going 3-for-3 with double run and RBI. Centerfielder David Thomas went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Rightfielder Spencer Draws went 2-for-5 with a run.
Fresno State had 10 hits, with five players recording two hits each. Leadoff hitter Jake Stone went 2-for-5 with a run and three RBIs.
Air Force scored the first run of the game in the first to lead early. Fresno State scored two in the third to go up 2-1. After the Falcons tied the game up with a run in the fourth, Fresno State scored four in the sixth to go up 6-2. The Falcons rallied with three in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-5 before the game was called due to darkness. Fresno State scored an insurance run in the ninth on Sunday.
In game two, Fresno State pounded out 17 hits in the 10-8 win. Third baseman Kevin Viers led the Bulldogs with three hits, three runs and three RBIs, in addition to a triple and home run. Third baseman Chris Mariscal added four hits.
Air Force had 10 hits in the game, led by Thomas. Thomas went 3-for-5 with three runs and two-run home run. Draws added two hits and Williams had a hit and two RBIs.
Tim Borst (1-0) pitched 6.1 innings, allowing six runs and striking out six in the win for Fresno State. Jake Schull closed out the game with 1.2 innings of relief for his fourth save of the season.
Falcon starting pitcher Griffin Jax (1-3) struck out four in 4.1 innings pitched. Trent Monaghan closed out the fifth inning in relief. Ben Yokley pitched three scoreless innings in relief, striking out a career-high four batters. Stanford pitched a scoreless ninth.
Fresno State scored three runs in the second and one in the third to jump ahead 4-0. The Falcons scored three in the fourth. Fresno State scored two in the fourth, while AFA scored one to make it 6-4 after four innings.
Fresno State scored one in the fifth and three in the sixth to go up 10-4. Air Force rallied back with two in the sixth and two in the eighth.
Air Force returns to action Tuesday, March 11, beginning a two-game series at Arizona.
