USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force baseball (3-8) rallied to an 8-7 win over South Dakota State (2-9) on Tuesday afternoon at Falcon Field. The Falcons scored seven unanswered runs, capped by a go-ahead two-run home run by Nic Ready in the eighth inning.
Trailing 7-1, the Falcons scored five runs in the seventh to pull to within one run. Ready then put Air Force ahead with a two-run blast to left center.
Sophomore Josh Leaser (1-0) tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth innings for the win. Reliever Nick Biancalana gave the Falcons four innings, striking out six. Starter John Byrnes pitched three innings, striking out three.
The Falcons had 11 hits in the game. Ready went 2 for 4 with two runs and three RBIs. Tyler Zabojnik, Rob Dau, Daniel Jones and Colby Brown had two hits each for Air Force. Dau doubled and scored two, Jones also scored two runs and Brown drove in two runs.
Mitchell Oehme (0-1) took the loss in relief for South Dakota State. Korey Kuhlmann pitching six innings in the start, allowing four runs.
The Jackrabbits had 13 hits. Josh Falk went 2 for 5 with a homer and three RBIs. Gus Steiger had three hits.
Air Force led 1-0 early with a run in the third. South Dakota State scored six runs in the fourth and one in the sixth to go up 7-1. The Falcons were then able to rally back for the win.
“We scrapped back by continuing to attack,” Air Force head coach Mike Kazlausky said. “Although we were down 7-1 at one point, we just battled and gave ourselves a chance to win the game. Nic Ready then delivered for us.”
The two games series wraps up tomorrow. First pitch is 2 pm MT.
