SURPRISE, Ariz. - The Air Force baseball team dropped a 19-7 contest to UC Riverside Friday afternoon at the Coca-Cola Classic at the Surprise Sports Complex. The loss dropped the Falcons to 4-5 and improved the Highlanders to 7-4.
Air Force led 7-2 early on after a seven-run second inning. The Falcons were held scoreless the rest of the game, however. Riverside took control of the game in the middle innings, with 16 runs in the fourth-through-sixth innings.
The Falcons had 11 hits in the game, led by senior centerfielder Nathan Carter. Carter went 4-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and two RBIs. Blair Roberts added two hits and a pair of RBIs. Matthew Roberts also had two RBIs.
Falcon starting pitcher Ben Bertelson went 3.1 innings for the Falcons, striking out four. Reliever Mike Kazakoff (0-1) was tagged with the loss. Brad Pingel was Air Force's most effective pitcher, tossing three shutout innings in relief, while striking out three. Alex Lerda-Plog and Cameron White also pitched for AFA.
UC Riverside had 22 hits in the game. Bryan Horst went 4-for-7 with four runs and four RBIs. David Andriese added a pair of solo home runs for the Highlanders.
UC Riverside reliever Dylan Stuart (1-0) pitched 5.2 scoreless innings for the win. Highlander starter Matt Andriese--who entered the game having not allowed an earned run through his first 15 innings pitched--was tagged for seven runs in 1.1 innings pitched.
In the seven run innning, the Falcons batted around and had six hits.
