PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Air Force baseball defeated Western Michigan 8-3 Sunday morning at the Snowbird Classic at North Charlotte Regional Park. The Falcons improved to 5-7 on the season, winning three of four games over the weekend.
The Falcons tied a season-high with 15 base hits. Senior shortstop Matt Thorne and senior leftfielder Alex Bast had three hits each to lead AFA. Freshman designated hitter Peter Johnson and freshman rightfielder Zach Reks added two hits each. Johnson and junior centerfielder David Baska had two RBIs as well.
The Falcons broke open a 3-3 tie ballgame with a five-run sixth inning, which proved to be the difference. Freshman starting pitcher Steven Trojan (1-1) allowed three unearned runs in six innings pitched for his first-career win. Trojan stuck out five.
Senior righthander Jack Hourin closed out the game with three scoreless innings of relief to pick up the save.
Western Michigan reliever Monty Porter (0-2) took the loss. Bronco starting pitcher David Brennan allowed three runs in two innings pitched. Western Michigan had eight hits. Shortstop Andrew Sohn and second baseman Kurt Hoekstra had two hits each.
The Falcons scored a run in the first to jump out to an early lead. After the Broncos tied it up with a run in the third, the Falcons plated two in the third to go up 3-1. Western Michigan tied it up with two runs in the fourth.
Air Force returns to action Friday, March 8, at Gardner-Webb.
