KINSTON, N.C. - Air Force baseball downed Navy 8-7 in 10 innings Saturday in game one action at the Freedom Classic at Grainer Stadium. Game two of the doubleheader will begin at approximately 4 p.m. EST.
Air Force scored three runs in the top of the 10th to break open a 5-5 tie. Navy made things interesting with two runs in the bottom of the inning, but Falcon reliever Alex Baker (1-0) got Navy pinch-hitter Josh Moore to fly out to deep center to end the game.
Navy came right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Taking advantage of back-to-back fielding errors, the Midshipmen got a three-run homer from Chance Jones to take a 3-2 lead.
The Falcons re-took the lead in the sixth on a two-run homer by Thomas to left-center after Noah Pierce led off the inning with a double. Air Force added a run in the eighth as Thomas scored on a fielding error on Matthew Roberts' grounder to second.
Navy battled back to tie the game up in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs via wild pitch and a tying RBI-single by Jones.
The Falcons then erupted for three runs in the top of the 10th. Matthew Roberts drew a walk and moved to second an a sac bunt by Adam Hill. Blair Roberts then singled up the middle to score Matthew Roberts. Garrett Custons followed with a triple off the center field fence to score Blair Roberts and then came around to score on a sac bunt by Alex Bast.
The Falcons had 11 hits in the game. Thomas led the Falcons at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs and just missed hitting for the cycle by a single.
Navy had 12 hits in the game. Chance Jones led the Mids, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
Air Force had a solid starting performance from sophomore right-hander Cameron White. White pitched 7.1 innings, allowing five runs, one earned, while striking out seven. Baker pitched the final 2.2 innings in relief for the win.
Navy starting pitcher Ben Nelson went five innings, allowing three runs, while striking out five. Reliever Joel Rinehart (0-1) took the loss.
