KINSTON, N.C. - Air Force baseball dropped a 3-1 pitchers' duel to Navy Friday afternoon at the Freedom Classic at Grainger Stadium. The Falcons dropped to 0-5 on the season, in a game that lasted one hour and 53 minutes.
The Midshipmen (3-2) broke up a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the ninth inning. Navy starting pitcher Ben Nelson (2-0) held the Falcons to five hits in the complete game effort.
The loss overshadowed a stellar pitching outing from Falcon starting pitcher Cameron White (0-2). The junior pitched 8.1 innings, allowing the three runs, two earned, while striking out seven. Freshman Bo Wilson relieved White in the ninth and induced an inning-ending double play.
Navy pushed across the go-ahead run in the ninth on a bases loaded walk to rightfielder Greg Dupell, scoring shortstop David Wiedeman. The Mids added one more run to take the two-run lead.
Navy scored the first run of the game in the third inning to take an early lead. The Falcons tied the game up with a run in the fourth. Bast singled down the right field line to score Baska, who led the inning off with a double.
Air Force and Navy return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 22, with a single game at 5 p.m. EST. Sunday will feature a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m.
