Air Force Drops Season-Opener At Cal State Bakersfield, 8-4

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Air Force baseball opened the 2010 season with an 8-4 loss at Cal State Bakersfield Friday afternoon at Hardt Field. The Roadrunners hit four home runs in the game, led by J.J. Henry's two long-balls. CSUB starter Mickey Jannis (1-0) struck out six in 6.1 innings, while holding Air Force to four runs to pick up the win. Falcon starter Alex Truesdale (0-1) was tagged with the loss, striking out four in 5.2 innings, allowing six runs. Air Force out-hit CSUB 12-11. Four Falcons had multiple hits, led by freshman right fielder Garrett Custons, who went 3-for-5 with a double, triple and two runs scored. Senior second baseman K.J. Randhawa, junior center fielder Nathan Carter and freshman shortstop Matthew Roberts had two hits each. Henry led the Roadrunners with three hits and three RBIs. Ryan McIntyre also had two hits to go with a homer and three RBIs as well. Air Force scored two runs in the third, highlighted by Custons' RBI-triple to take an early 2-0 lead. CSUB came right back in the bottom of the innings with a solo homer from Henry and a three-run shot from McIntyre to go ahead 4-2. After another Henry solo homer in the fourth, Air Force responded with a run in the fifth. The two teams traded runs in the sixth to make it 6-4. CSUB then added two more insurance runs in the seventh for the games' final runs. Air Force used four relievers in the game, combing to allow one earned run. Sophomore left-hander Andrew Loyd retired both batters he faced. Senior right-hander Michael Ruvolo allowed allowed two runs to the two batters he faced.
Freshman left-hander Kincaid Koehler struck out a batter in one-third inning of work. Freshman right-hander Matt Zettler did not allow a run in 1.1 innings of work. Air Force started four freshmen in the field. Along with Custons and Roberts, Travis Lane started at catcher and Ethan Loosen at third. Air Force and CSUB return to action Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. PST |
