SAN MARCOS, Texas - Air Force baseball fell 8-2 to Michigan in day two action at the Texas State Invitational Saturday night at Bobcat Ballpark. The Falcons moved to 1-1 on the season, while the Wolverines improved to 1-2.
The Air Force bats struggled to get going against Michigan starting pitcher Ben Ballantine (1-0). Ballantine allowed just one hit while striking out five in seven innings pitched for the win.
Freshman Griffin Jax (1-0) made his pitching debut for the Falcons, allowing six runs, four earned. Jax, who also batted cleanup, struck out three in seven innings pitched. Sophomore righthander Bo Wilson pitched the eighth inning in relief.
Michigan scored two runs in the first, second, fifth and eighth innings. The Wolverines had nine hits in the game. Leadoff hitter Jackson Grines had a triple, two RBIs and a run scored to lead Michigan.
Jax and freshman leftfielder Tyler Jones had Air Force's base hits. Freshman second baseman Adam Groesbeck scored the Falcons' first run in the fourth inning on a throwing error. Senior Jake Schomaker scored the Falcons' second run in the eighth inning on Jones' RBI-double.
Four Falcons made their debuts in the game. Sophomore Adam Blankenship and freshmen Travis Neubeck, Jordan Hanlin and Bradley Haslam all played their first collegiate games in reserve roles. Air Force has now played eight freshmen so far in its first two games.
The Falcons close out the weekend against host Texas State tomorrow. First pitch is slated for 3:30 pm CST.
