SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Air Force baseball opened the 2013 season with a 9-2 loss at UTSA Friday night at Roadrunner Field. The Roadrunners scored eight unanswsered to pull away.
After trailing 1-0 early on, the Falcons took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. The lead was short-lived as UTSA tied the game in the bottom of the inning and took the lead with a run in the sixth.
The Roadrunners broke the game open with four runs in the seventh and added two more in the eighth.
Falcon starting pitcher and Texas-native Cameron White (Colleyville) went 6.1 innings in the loss. The junior righthander stuck out two and did not walk any batters. White was relieved by sophomore Ben Yokley. Freshman Bo Wilson pitched an inning in his Air Force debut. Senior Todd Del Toro also saw action in relief, retiring the last batter in the eighth.
Air Force had seven hits on the night. Senior leftfielder Alex Bast led the way with a 3-for-4 night. Senior Garrett Custons, sophomores Brian Sicher and Noah Pierce and freshman Spencer Draws also had base hits for the Falcons.
UTSA reliever Jordan Pacheco picked up the win with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. Roadrunner starting pitcher Michael Kraft went 4.2 innings, striking out four.
UTSA had 16 hits on the day. Centerfielder Daniel Rockett led the way for the Roadrunners, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored.
Air Force scored both of its runs on back-to-back dropped fly balls by UTSA. Pierce scored the first run for AFA and senior Matthew Roberts scored the second.
Five Falcon freshmen made their debuts. Zach Reks started in right field, while Draws, Peter Johnson and Mariano Long had pinch-hit at bats.
Air Force looks to regroup with a doubleheader tomorrow with UTSA. First pitch for game one is at 2 p.m. CST.
