USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force cross country head coach Juli Benson recently announced the addition of Ryan Collins as an assistant coach on her coaching staff. In addition to his duties with the cross country team, Collins will also serve as an assistant coach for the middle distance and distance program of Ralph Lindeman's track and field team.
Collins, an All-American runner at both the University of Virginia and the University of Wisconsin, joined the Air Force coaching staff in October 2013.
"I am very excited to add Ryan to our cross country and track and field coaching team at the Air Force Academy," Benson said. "He brings a very unique background to our program - having been an All-American athlete at both UVA and Wisconsin and a member of an NCAA Championship cross country team."
Helping Virginia to three consecutive appearances at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, Collins earned All-America honors as a senior by placing 32nd at the national meet. He was a three-time all-Southeast Region selection, highlighted by two top-10 finishes, and a three-time all-ACC honoree. He also helped the Cavaliers to the conference cross country title in 2008.
As a distance runner for the Virginia track and field team, Collins earned All-America status in the 5000-meter run at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. He also claimed three ACC titles in that event, en route to five all-ACC selections (three indoor, two outdoor).
Collins concluded his collegiate eligibility at Wisconsin, as he worked toward his master's degree. As a member of the Badgers' cross country team, Collins helped Wisconsin to the team title at the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships, while earning All-America status behind a 23rd-place finish. A USTFCCCA All-Academic selection, Collins led Wisconsin to its 10th-straight Great Lakes Regional title behind an eighth-place individual finish and helped the Badgers to their 13th consecutive Big Ten title with a sixth-place finish.
During the 2012 track and field season, he earned a pair of top-10 finishes at the Big Ten Championships (indoor 5000-meter run - seventh; outdoor 10,000-meter run - third), while helping the Badgers to the outdoor conference title. He also placed 13th in the 10,000-meter run at the NCAA West Preliminary.
"Coach Lindeman and I are thrilled with the enthusiasm and experiences that Coach Collins brings to the table," Benson added. "Adding Ryan to our family here at USAFA will only make us better as a cross country and track and field team."
A native of Mansfield, Mass., Collins earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia in 2011, before obtaining a master's from the University of Wisconsin.
