COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Air Force sophomore Gavin Owens was named the Mountain West Cross Country Athlete of the Week, the league office announced today (Oct. 11). It is the first such honor for Owens, who used a career-best 8K time to pace the Falcons at last weekend's Tiger Invitational.
A native of McAllister, Mont., Owens finished 11th out of 152 runners at the Fort Hays State Tiger Invitational on Oct. 8, completing the course in an 8000-meter time of 25:15.5. That is a personal-best time for the sophomore, who also accounted for the highest finish of his young career. Owens was one of four Falcons to finish within the top 20 of the field, as Air Force placed third in the 15-team event.
His award marks the fourth time this season that an Air Force runner has been named the MW Athlete of the Week, as Owens joined Melissa Fuerst (Sept. 20) and Jim Walmsley (Sept. 13, Sept. 20). The four selections in 2011 ties an Academy record for the most weekly conference awards in a single season.
Owens shared the league's Oct. 11 award with San Diego State's Marianne Hogan, who captured the women's weekly honor.
The Falcons return to action this weekend, as they travel to Madison, Wis., on Friday, Oct. 14, for the third-annual Wisconsin/adidas Invitational.
