Menís Cross Country Finishes Third at Prestigious Notre Dame Invitational
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Air Force men's cross country team picked up a fourth-place finish at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind., on Friday, Oct. 1. Competing against some of the top teams in the country, the Falcons recorded 113 points to take fourth in the 24-team meet ... just one point behind the third-place team. In fact, all five of the Falcons' scoring runners finished within the top 45.
Competing with 193 other runners, senior Brian Dumm (Fairfax, Va.) was the top Falcon-finisher, taking ninth with 23:51. Junior Mark Walter (League City, Texas) was close behind at 23:58 for a 12th-place finish. Senior Abe Wengel (Menomonie, Wis.) took 21st, with a time of 24:12. Juniors Nick Wilson (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Jeff Gosselin (Cornelius, N.C.) were the other two Air Force scorers, with respective times of 24:18 (28th) and 24:35 (44th).
Four others also competed for the Falcons. Matt Hellier (Modesto, Calif.) finished 68th with a time of 24:50 and Kalib Wilkinson (Huntersville, N.C.) placed 88th with a time of 25:08. Travis Patterson (Simi Valley, Calif.) placed 93rd with a time of 25:09 and Nathan Franz (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) rounded out the Air Force contingent with a 115th-place finish of 25:24.
On the women's side, Air Force picked up an 18th-place finish with 451 points. Margaret Frash (Newburyport, Mass.) led the team with an 80th-place finish and a time of 18:08, but Nicole Graham (Blue Springs, Mo.) was close behind with a time of 18:10 (82nd-place). Freshman Kelly Robinson (Holt, Mich.) was 91st, with a time of 19:07.
Ashley Snyder (Pickerington, Ohio) and Elizabeth Catherwood (Bethesda, Md.) finished 110th, with matching times of 18:28, Ashley Culp (West Des Moines, Iowa) finished 118th, with a time of 18:34.
Junior Andrea Pinchak (Shaker Heights, Ohio) recorded a time of 19:05 (168th), while Kate Papenburg (Red Lion, Pa.) clocked in at 19:13. Viven Aspden (Yucaipa, Calif.) placed 183rd with a time of 19:26 to wrap up the Falcon trekkers.
The rest of the Air Force team competes tomorrow at the Rocky Mountain Shootout in Bolder, Colo.
