Falcons Win Menís Title at Woody Greeno Invitational
LINCOLN, Neb. -- With a time of 25:25, senior Abe Wengel (Menomonie, Wis.) won the men's University Division race at the 2004 Woody Greeno Invitational and led the Air Force men's cross country program to the University team title. The Falcons claimed seven of the top eight spots (and eight of the top 10) at the annual race held in Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday, Sept. 18.
The men's team posted a team score of 15 points, distancing themselves from runner-up Wichita State by 67 points. South Dakota State finished third with 86 points, while Missouri (109 points), host Nebraska (114 points) and Creighton (133 points) rounded out the university competition.
Behind Wengel and his winning time of 25:25 was junior Nick Wilson (Jacksonville, Fla.), who crossed the finish line in 25:32 to finish second, and classmate Mark Walter (League City, Texas) who clocked a 25:44 to finish third.
Senior co-captain Brian Dumm (Fairfax, Va.) finished fourth with a time of 25:51, while junior Matt Hellier (Modesto, Calif.) posted a time of 25:55 to place fifth. Senior Nathan Franz (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) took sixth with a time of 26:05 and junior Jeff Gosselin (Cornelius, N.C.) finished eighth in 26:15. Classmate Kalib Wilkinson (Huntersville, N.C.) rounded out the Falcons' top-10 contingent, clocking a 10th-place finish time of 26:21.
Junior Travis Patterson (Simi Valley, Calif.) posted a time of 26:45 to finish 14th, while sophomore Richard Elmore (Napa. Calif.) finished 16th with a time of 26:47. Senior Kyle Davidson (Houston, Texas) and sophomore Jason Beck (Cincinnati, Ohio) clocked respective times of 26:51 and 26:54 to finish 17th and18th.
Freshman Dan DeRusha (Milford, Mich.) was just shy of a top-20 finish, placing 22nd with a time of 27:10. Senior Derek Storbeck (Wayne, N.J.) crossed the finish line in a time of 27:47 to finish 35th, while freshmen Josh Van Wyngaarden (La Vista, Neb.) and Clavin Glass (Antelope, Calif.) clocked times of 27:58 and 28:03 to finish 39th and 40th.
Freshman Ian McFarland (West Plains, Mo.) clocked a time of 28:11 (43rd) and Jordan Hughes finished in 28:40 (50th). Cory Plinko recorded a time of 28:58 (55th) and Jared Graham (Blue Springs, Mo.) finished 69th with a time of 30:49. Kenny Grosselin (Ramstein Air Base, Germany) rounded out the Air Force runners with a 71st-place time of 30:55.
On the women's side, the Falcons finished fourth with 80 points. Missouri's team won the university race with 28 points, while Wichita State and Nebraska finished second and third with respective point totals of 74 and 78. With 128 points, Creighton finished fifth behind Air Force, while South Dakota State rounded out the competition with 132 points and a sixth-place finish.
Freshman Kelly Robinson (Holt, Mich.) was the highest finishing Falcon, placing 13th, with a time of 23:14. Sophomores Elizabeth Catherwood (Bethesda, Md.) and Ashley Culp (West Des Moines, Iowa) placed 14th and 15th, with times of 23:22 and 23:25. Classmate Margaret Frash (Newburyport, Mass.) also claimed a top-20 finish with a 17th-place time of 23:31.
Junior Andrea Pinchak (Shaker Heights, Ohio) and sophomore Ashley Snyder (Pickerington, Ohio) finished 21st and 22nd, respectively, with times of 23:50 and 23:52. Junior Vivien Aspden (Yucaipa, Calif.) placed 26th, clocking a time of 24:02, while freshmen Kate Papenberg (Red Lion, Pa.) recorded a time of 24:29 to finish 29th. Junior Nicole Graham (Blue Springs, Mo.) and freshman Kristin Trichler (Santa Barbara, Calif.) posted respective times of 25:15 and 25:22 to finish 34th and 35th.
Kasey Wilson finished 42nd with a time of 26:15, while Candice Killian clocked a 47th-place time of 27:17. Katie Suhrhoff rounded out the Air Force finishers, with a time 51st-place time of 29:01.
The Falcons return to action on Friday, Oct. 1, when part of the team travels to South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame Invitational. The rest of the team will compete at the Rocky Mountain Shootout the next day (Saturday, Oct. 2) in Boulder, Colo.
