Men Picked Second in MW Preseason Coaches' Poll

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Air Force men's cross country team was picked to finish second in the Mountain West, the league office announced this afternoon (Aug. 27) with the annual preseason coaches' poll. Receiving one first-place vote, the men finished just three points out of first.
Air Force amassed 21 points, finishing just three points behind New Mexico, who claimed top preseason honors for the second straight year with 24 points and four first-place votes. Boise State, who earned the final first-place vote, finished third in the standings with 17 points. Colorado State and Wyoming finished fourth (12 points) and fifth (nine points), respectively, while Fresno State rounded out the men's preseason coaches' poll with seven points.
The women's team was chosen fourth in the annual preseason poll, collecting 43 points from the nine league coaches. New Mexico was also picked to win the women's title, with 63 points and seven first-place votes. Boise State (54 points) and Colorado State (48 points) each tallied one first-place vote, en route to ranking second and third, respectively. Following the Falcons' 43 points was Wyoming, who ranked fifth with 39 points. UNLV and Fresno State tied for sixth with 23 points apiece, while Nevada and San Diego State rounded out the women's field in eighth (21 points) and ninth (10 points), respectively.
Air Force, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Juli Benson, opens the season this Friday (Aug. 31) at the Colorado State Open in Fort Collins. All conference teams will meet in Las Vegas, Nev., on Friday, Oct. 26, for the 2012 Mountain West Cross Country Championships.
