Air Force Men Picked Second in MW Preseason Poll

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Air Force men's cross country team was picked to finish second in the Mountain West, the league office announced this afternoon (Aug. 22) with the release of the annual preseason coaches' poll. While the men were slated to finish second out of eight teams, the women were picked fourth out of 11 teams.
With one first-place vote and 42 total points, the men finished just seven points behind four-time defending conference champion New Mexico (49 points). Boise State and Colorado State tied for third with 34 points apiece. League newcomer Utah State placed fifth with 24 points, while Wyoming (sixth, 20 points), Fresno State (seventh, 13 points) and new conference program San Jose State (eighth, nine points) round out the men's field.
The women's team was chosen fourth in the annual preseason poll, collecting 72 points from the 11 league coaches. New Mexico, winners of the last five conference championship meets, was picked to win the women's title with 100 points and 10 first-place votes. Boise State (85 points) and Colorado State (83 points, one first-place vote) were picked to finish second and third, respectively, while Air Force and conference newcomer Utah State (fifth, 63 points) rounded out the top five. Wyoming (sixth, 57 points), Nevada (seventh, 47 points), Fresno State (eighth, 37 points), UNLV (ninth, 23 points) and San Diego State (10th, 20 points) completed the top 10, while first-year Mountain West member San Jose State was picked 11th with 18 points.
Air Force, under the direction of fifth-year head coach Juli Benson, opens the season on Friday, Sept. 6, at the Colorado State Open in Fort Collins. All conference teams will meet at the Academy's Eisenhower Golf Course on Friday, Nov. 1, for the 2013 Mountain West Cross Country Championships.
