June 24, 2010
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Brittany Morreale (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.), a Rhodes Scholar and 2010 graduate of the Air Force Academy, was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women's Track and Field/Cross Country second team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday, June 24.
Morreale, who earned Academic All-District VII first-team honors in early June to earn a spot on the national ballot, is the first female in the Academy's Division I history to receive Academic All-America distinction.
The recently commissioned second lieutenant, who also earned all-district honors in 2008, was the Academy's 11th cadet-athlete to be chosen as a Rhodes Scholar. Morreale, who posted a 3.77 GPA in physics, will spend one month at the Language Institute in Monterey, Calif., before heading to Oxford, England, to earn her graduate degree.
During the cross country season, Morreale competed in five meets, including a team-leading performance at the Colorado State Classic. She recorded the second-fastest time on the team at both the 5K (18:38.50) and 5.8K (23:27.00) distances.
