Juli Benson Named to Team USA Staff for World Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Air Force distance coach Juli Benson has been named to the Team USA women's coaching staff for this summer's IAAF World Outdoor Championships, USA Track and Field announced today (Feb. 14).

Benson, who also serves as the head coach of the Falcons' cross country team, will coach the women's distance runners at the 14th IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Athletics, which will be held August 10-18 in Moscow, Russia.

Since her arrival to the Air Force track and field program in 2009, members of the Falcons' middle distance and distance teams have accounted for five All-America awards, 14 Mountain West titles, 27 all-conference selections and 13 Academy records. During her four cross country seasons at Air Force, athletes for the 2010 Mountain West Coach of the Year have accounted for 18 all-conference selections and 10 top-10 finishes.

This will be the third time that Benson has served on a Team USA coaching staff. After making her debut as the junior women's coach at the 2003 World Cross Country Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland, Benson served on the coaching staff of the 2007 World Outdoor Championships in Osaka, Japan. She also served as the personal coach for Jenny Simpson at the 2011 World Outdoor Championships in Daegu, South Korea, when Simpson claimed the gold medal in the 1500-meter run.

An accomplished runner in her own right, Benson represented the United States in the 1500-meter run at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. She is a two-time silver medalist in the 1500-meter run at the World Student Games and a gold medalist in that event at the 1996 Atlanta Grand Prix. She also earned a bronze medal in the mile at the 1997 Grand Prix Final.

She is joined on the Team USA women's staff by head coach Beth Alford-Sullivan and assistant coaches LaTanya Sheffield (sprints/hurdles), Delethea Quarles (jumps/combined) and Lance Deal (throws).



Team USA recorded 25 medals at the last IAAF World Championship meet (2011, Daegu), and maintained its status as the world's No. 1 track and field team.
