Falcons Place 17 on Academic All-Conference Team

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force cross country team placed 17 of its members on the Mountain West Conference All-Academic Team, the commissioner's office announced this afternoon (Feb. 11). The squad, represented by eight men and nine women, boasted more honorees than any other fall sport at the Academy during the recent 2009 season.
Backed by a 3.58 grade-point-average in civil engineering, senior Zach Nordahl picked up his third consecutive academic all-conference selection. Classmate Andy Schweitzer earned his second academic nod behind a 3.08 cumulative GPA in management. Junior Tyler Small (3.53, physics) and sophomore Ryan Del Grosso (3.18, environmental engineering) also claimed their second academic all-conference citation.
Four freshmen selections also highlighted the men's list of honorees. Rookie of the Year Jeremy Drenckhahn (3.82), Thomas Heikkinen (3.06), Gage Owens (3.54) and Andrew Quallio (3.03) are currently undeclared on their major.
Brittany Morreale is one of three members of the women's team to hold a GPA higher than 3.80. Behind a grade-point-average of 3.81 in physics, the senior claimed her third academic all-MWC honor. Freshmen Kate Kanetzky (3.85, undeclared) and Kara Hovseth (3.81, biology) also surpassed the 3.80 mark.
Sophomores Meghan Prinkey (3.54, astronautical engineering) and Katie Carroll (3.34, electrical engineering) each picked up their second academic all-conference nod, while classmate Auriele Fain earned her first selection.
Three additional freshmen (undeclared majors) earned academic all-conference selections. Kathleen Vardell has a cumulative GPA of 3.36, while Dominique Amor and Rookie of the Year Jennifer Bremser holds matching grade-point-averages of 3.16.
A total of 384 student-athletes were named to the "Fall 2009" Academic All-Mountain West Conference team. Fall sports include men's and women's cross country, football, women's soccer and women's volleyball. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
