Jan. 31, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Sixteen members of the Air Force cross country team earned Academic All-Mountain West honors this afternoon (Jan. 31), the league office announced. Highlighting the Falcons' cross country representatives were five runners who earned their fourth consecutive all-academic team selection.
The cross country squad, represented by 11 men and five women, collected the most honors of any sport at the Academy during the 2012 fall season. The men's honorees included five seniors, one sophomore and five freshmen, while the women's roster featured three seniors, one junior and one sophomore.
Seniors Jen Bremser, Jeremy Drenckhahn, Kate Kanetzky, Gage Owens and Andrew Quallio each made their fourth appearance on the Academic All-Mountain West list. The five current additions of four-time selections nearly doubled the program's total of such honorees from six to 11.
Seniors Ted Artz and Matt Bell claimed their third consecutive selection to the academic all-MW list, while sophomores Rebecca Esselstein and Elliot Myers claimed honors for the second straight year. Junior Adrianna Dong and senior Melissa Fuerst made their first appearance on the academic all-conference roster, joining freshmen Sean Bapty, Patrick Corona, Andrew Hood, Kevin Mihalik and Casey Peloquin.
A conference-record 409 student-athletes were named to the fall 2012 Mountain West Academic All-Conference team. Fall sports include men's and women's cross country, football, women's soccer and women's volleyball. To be eligible, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.0 or better and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
Air Force had 38 cadet-athletes collect academic all-conference honors during the fall.
