Air Force Academy

In what will go down as one of the best seasons ever for head coach Mark Stanforth and the Air Force women's cross country team, Air Force placed sixth, scoring 209 points, in the NCAA Mountain Region Championship last week in Albuquerque, N.M. Brandess Pardue, a junior from Aurora, Colo., was the Falcons' top finisher, placing 21st with a time of 21 minutes, 53 seconds to earn all-region honors. C4C (Fr.) Nichole Graham from Blue Springs, Mo., finished in 30th place with a time of 22:13 and C1C (Sr.) Elissa Ballas finished 39th with a time of 22:27. Overall, the Air Force runners all had faster times than the 2001 team in the region meet. The rest of AFA's finishers included Kelly McPherson with a 52nd-place finish (22:46), Jean Taylor's 70th-place finish in 23:08, Cindy Dawson (86th/23:37) and Anne Chumlea (88th/23:39).

In the men's 10,000-meters race, the Air Force men's team finished 10th with a score of 215. Air Force runners C2Cs Ben Payne from Arvada, Colo., and Chris Acs, from Niles, Ohio finished 11th (30:40) and 25th (30:53), respectively, and both earned all-region honors. Overall, this year's team ran faster than the 2001 team that qualified for the NCAA Championships. Only Payne, Acs and Jim Blech are return competitors. Blech finished 55th with a time of 31:56. This year's AFA scorers included Abe Wengel's 60th-place finish (32:01), C4C Kalib Wilkinson in 64th place (32:14), C4C Jeff Gosselin (73rd/32:45) and C1C Rudy Taute (95th/34:32).

The NCAA Mountain Region women's title went to top-ranked Brigham Young, while Northern Arizona upended No. 3 Colorado for the men's championship. BYU junior Michaela Manova was the women's individual winner. CU senior Jorge Torres defended his Mountain Region title in a wire-to-wire victory. The defending national champion Cougar women placed all five scoring runners in the top-10 to finish with a score of 29 points, 37 ahead of Colorado's third-ranked women. The Buffaloes earned the second NCAA Championship automatic qualifying spot with 66 points.

"I'm pleased with the performance of both teams at the region championships and excited about the future prospects for the team. Sixth is the best finish ever for our women in the region. When you realize that four of the teams ahead of us are ranked in the top-30 nationally, we're not that far from qualifying for the NCAA Championships," Stanforth said.

"Tenth for the men is not what we're used to after qualifying in the NCAA meet the last two years; however, our men ran well in a field that included eight top-30 national teams. I think both our men and our women can challenge in our spot in the NCAA meet next year. We return nine of our top-10 women and eight of our top-10 men so we will be improved next fall and several of the teams ahead of us have big holes to fill," Stanforth continued.
