Men's Cross Country Wins Metro State Invitational

DENVER, Colo. - Backed by four of the top eight collegiate finishes, the Air Force men's cross country team won the team title at the Metro State Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 6, in Denver. The Falcons, who placed all five scoring runners within the top 13, defeated the seven-team field by 16 points.
Junior Gavin Owens paced the Falcons in the 85-runner field at Washington Park, as he placed second among collegiate runners and third overall with an 8K time of 26:04. Freshman Patrick Corona finished sixth in 26:52 to take sixth, while junior Carl Eifert and freshman Kevin Mihalik also placed within the overall top 10, as they placed ninth (27:03) and 10th (27:05), respectively. Junior Carson Fugal rounded out the Falcons' contingent of scoring runners, as he placed 16th overall with a time of 27:35.
Air Force won the team title with 34 points, while Adams State (the nation's top-ranked team in Division II) placed second with 50 points. Meet host Metro State finished third with 69 points, while Colorado Christian (fourth, 117 points) and Northern Colorado (fifth, 127 points) rounded out the top five.
Freshmen Dan Caddigan (19th, 27:47) and Evan Fortney (20th, season-best 27:48) added top-20 finishes, as a part of the squad's top-seven. Three more Falcons finished within the top 30, as freshman Casey Peloquin and senior Seth Pelletier finished 23rd (season-best 28:01) and 24th (28:03), respectively, while junior Alex Lindsay clocked in at 28:14 to place 29th.
Freshman Sean Bapty finished 32nd with a season-best time of 28:21, while senior Gage Owens finished 34th in 28:23. Freshmen Daniel Shellhouse (38th, season-best 28:40) and Christopher Madaffari (39th, 28:43) also finished within the top half of the field, while Grant Caswell finished 43rd in his first race of the year with a debut time of 28:46. Fellow freshman Andrew Hood clocked a season-best 28:56 to place 45th, while classmates Tanner Ruhl and Stone Shoaf placed 58th (29:25) and 59th (29:27), respectively, in their first 8K races of the year.
In addition, three members of the women's team competed in Saturday's 6K event at Washington Park. Junior Adrianna Dong paced the trio with a 14th-place time of 24:25, while sophomore Marie Rossillon finished 17th in a 6K-debut time of 24:50. All three females finished within the top 25 of the 71-runner race, as freshman Emily Wagemaker placed 21st with a time of 25:08.
Air Force returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 13, when it travels to Louisville, Ky., for the annual Pre-Nationals Meet at Tom "E.P." Sawyer State Park.
