Falcons Conclude Action at Rocky Mountain Shootout

BOULDER, Colo. - Freshman Ryan Graf paced the Air Force men's cross country team to a second-place finish in the Division I team standings on Saturday, Sept. 28, in Boulder, Colo. Finishing seventh among Division I runners and 49th overall, Graf led a young squad of scoring runners at the Buffalo Ranch Cross Country Course, as just 0.22-seconds separated the Falcons' pack.
Graf clocked an 8K time of 28:05 to pace the Falcons to five of the top 11 scoring times in the Division I field, as the men accounted for 45 points to take second. Sophomore Daniel Shellhouse finished right behind Graf with a time of 28:06 (eighth in DI, 50th overall), while classmate Grant Caswell placed ninth among DI runners and 52nd overall with a time of 28:08. Fellow sophomore Sean Bapty finished 10th in the DI standings and 60th overall (28:20), while freshman Matthew Dorsey rounded out the scoring runners with a time of 28:26 to finish 11th in the DI standings and 63rd in the 166-runner field.
Four other men also competed in their first 8K race of the season. Sophomore Andrew Hood finished 73rd overall with a time of 28:46, while freshman Jason Engel finished 10 places behind (83rd) in a time of 29:13. Junior Zach Christenson finished 104th with a time of 29:55, while senior Matt Caldwell rounded out the Air Force contingent with a 118th-place time of 30:35.
With just 15 points, Colorado, ranked third in the latest USTFCCCA Poll, won the shootout title for the 23rd straight year, while the Buffs' Blake Theroux won the overall individual title. Western State, the second-ranked team among Division II programs, won the "non-DI" team title with 15 total points.
Three members of the women's team also traveled to Boulder for a 5.8K race at the Buffalo Ranch Cross Country Course. Sophomore Emily Wagemaker paced a trio of Falcons in the 115-competitor event, placing 49th overall with a career-best time of 24:48. Freshman Taylor Schwenke finished right behind Wagemaker with a 50th-place time of 24:49, while classmate Morgan Fagnant finished 55th in 25:12.
Air Force returns to action next Saturday (Oct. 4), as they head to South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame Invitational. The meet, which will be held on the ND Golf Course and feature five different races, is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. (EST).
