Jim Walmsley Takes First at Woody Greeno Invitational

LINCOLN, Neb. - With a time of 24:43.6, Air Force junior cross country runner Jim Walmsley won the men's 8000-meter race at the Woody Greeno Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday, Sept. 18. In addition to clocking the best time in a field of 295 runners, Walmsley also recorded the 17th fastest time ever on the Pioneer Park course.
In the first 8K race of the season for the Air Force men, Walmsley bettered the field of 295 by 11 seconds. He was one of four Falcons to finish within the top 25, while all five scoring runners placed within the top 30. Sophomore Jeremy Drenckhahn placed 15th in 25:49.4, while senior Justin Tyner and freshman Isaiah Bragg placed 24th (26:04.3) and 25th (26:07.6), respectively. Sophomore Andrew Quallio rounded out the top five finishers with a 28th-place time of 26:10.9.
Senior Katherine Ward paced the women's team with a time of 22:34.4 to finish 11th in the field of 211 - and third among University Division runners. Junior Katie Carroll placed 14th in 22:44.0, while sophomore Jen Bremser finished 17th with a time of 22:59.3. Sophomores Morgan Mosby and Melissa Fuerst rounded out the scoring runners with respective 20th (23:01.0) and 22nd (23:07.1) finishes.
Several other Falcons ran today at Pioneer Park.
On the men's side, senior Tyler Small placed 34th with a time of 26:15.7, while juniors Alex Zubey and Jon Rock placed 37th (26:25.5) and 38th (26:26.1), respectively. Sophomore Seth Pelletier placed 45th in 26:42.0 and freshman Lance Wolfsmith took 55th in a time of 26:53.0.
Five Air Force runners placed within eight places of one another in the middle of the pack. Freshman Matt Caldwell finished 61st in a time of 26:56.8, right in front of classmate Gavin Owens, who tallied a time of 26:57.3 (62nd). Freshman Jake Hawkins and senior Tyler Stanley recorded matching times of 26:59.0 to place 66th and 67th, respectively, while freshman Dan Bailey finished 68th in 26:59.8.
Sophomore Matt Cain finished 70th in 27:03.6, while freshman Shawn Dubbs placed 81st (27:13.6) and senior Brandon Hough finished 85th (27:18.1). Junior Ryan Del Grosso clocked a time of 27:33.0 to take 104th and sophomore Tommy Heikkinen finished 116th with a time of 27:41.5, while freshman Charlie Perkins and sophomore Gage Owens placed 123rd (27:49.4) and 128th (27:52.3), respectively. Sophomore Ted Artz (133rd, 27:55.8), freshman Carson Fugal (148th, 28:14.3), junior Nick White (149th, 28:15.7) and freshman Carl Eifert (159th, 28:23.8) rounded out the men's runners.
On the women's side, freshman Carley Gross just missed a scoring finish, placing 23rd with a time of 23:09.3. Sophomore Kate Kanetzky and freshman Tasha Mayne placed 48th (23:58.3) and 58th (24:15.4), respectively, while freshman Stephaney Saari (62nd, 24:19.1), junior Alexa Ramsier (87th, 24:57.9) and senior Whitney Beck (136th, 26:15.9) rounded out Air Force's contingent of runners.
The Falcons are off until Saturday, Oct. 2, when the squad splits for a pair of meets. Select members of the team will travel to Madison, Wis., for the adidas Invitational, while the remainder of the squad heads to Boulder, Colo., for the annual Rocky Mountain Shootout.
