Air Force Sweeps Team Titles at Nebraska

    LINCOLN, Neb. - The Air Force cross country team swept the men's and women's University team titles at the 23rd annual Woody Greeno Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 15, in Lincoln, Neb. It is the first-ever team title for the women's team, while the men captured their second straight victory.

    Backed by four top-10 finishes, the women defeated the 32-team field by 41 points to snap the host Huskers' quest for their eighth straight team title. Air Force becomes just the sixth team since 1990 to win the University team title at the Woody Greeno Invitational.

    Seniors Jen Bremser and Melissa Fuerst placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 289-runner women's 6K race. Bremser clocked a time of 21:37.58, while Fuerst clocked in at 21:41.18. Both times are ranked among the top-20 course times at Pioneers Park.

    Sophomore Heather Connick clocked in at 22:00.53 to finish eighth, while classmate Rebecca Esselstein placed 10th in a time of 22:22.28. Freshman Hannah Everson rounded out the Falcons' scoring runners with a 22nd-place time of 22:48.78.

    With three top-10 finishes, the men successfully defended their University team title with 58 total points, while finishing second overall in the 28-team 8K race. While just 17 points separated the College Division winner Colorado School of Mines and Air Force, the two programs separated themselves from the rest of the field by 37 points.

    Junior Isaiah Bragg clocked a time of 24:51.86 to finish third in the 308-runner race, while seniors Jeremy Drenckhahn and Andrew Quallio finished sixth (24:59.26) and ninth (25:19.56), respectively.

     

     

    All five of the Falcons' scoring runners placed within the top-25, as sophomores Riley Coates and Elliot Myers placed 19th (25:58.41) and 21st (26:04.91), respectively.

    Several additional members of the Air Force cross country team competed this weekend at Nebraska.

    Freshman Anna Olesinski (31st, 23:03.6), senior Kate Kanetzky (36th, 23:10.6) and classmate Morgan Mosby (40th, 23:27.6) all placed within the overall top 40 of the women's 6K race, while junior Adrianna Dong added a top-50 time of (23:32.6, 47th). Freshman Emily Wagemaker rounded out the Air Force runners with a 97th-place time of 24:22.2.

    On the men's side, junior Lance Wolfsmith finished 31st among the men's collegiate runners, and 39th overall, with a time of 26:19.1, while freshman Kevin Mihalik also earned a top-50 time of 26:28.2 (48th). Junior Gavin Owens crossed the finish line in 26:46.2 to place 65th overall, while senior Seth Pelletier and junior Carson Fugal finished 71st (26:49.7) and 78th (27:00.3), respectively. Freshman Patrick Corona (84th, 27:04.4), senior Ted Artz (92nd, 27:11.6) and junior Carl Eifert (98th, 27:15.1) also placed among the top third of the field. Freshman Dan Caddigan (114th, 27:33.4), junior Alex Lindsay (124th, 27:37.3), freshman Christopher Madaffari (145th, 27:53.8), senior Gage Owens (153rd, 28:00.5) and junior Matt Caldwell (184th, 28:23.1) rounded out the Falcons' contingent.

    The Falcons are off until Saturday, Sept. 29, when they split for a pair of competitions. Part of the team will travel to Lawrence, Kan., for the Rim Rock Farm Collegiate Classic, while the remainder of the squad will compete at the Rocky Mountain Shootout in Boulder, Colo.
